Penn State Go Location-based Notifications and Messages

Penn State Go now supports a new feature to send users essential messages and updates relative to their location on Penn State campuses.

How will these notifications be used?

Penn State plans to use these types of notifications to alert users of information relevant to their location on campus, including messages about safety, changes on campus, important reminders, events, and more.

Is Penn State Go or Penn State saving or sharing my location data?

No, absolutely not. The Penn State Go does not store or share user location information.

Depending on the permissions granted to the Penn State Go app, the app will periodically ask for the user’s location. If the user is within a specific area of a Penn State Campus, a notification is sent to the device. If not, the app does nothing and disregards the location information.

How do users enable the location-based notification feature?

This feature is enabled by giving the Penn State Go access to a user’s location as Always or While Using the App. The user’s location information is not shared or stored. Check out this article on How to enable location-based notifications in Penn State Go for detailed instructions

Is Penn State Go being used for contact tracing?

No. Penn State is not using any mobile app technology, including Penn State Go, for contact tracing.

Do I need to use location-based notifications to use the Penn State Go app?

No. Location-based notifications are opt-in. Users can agree not to give the app access to location information or turn off location access in the iOS or Android settings.
